Club Bids Farewell to Sydney

Sydney, an accountant by profession, was a founder member of the Rotary Club of Northwick Park when it was chartered in 1978 having previously been a member of Harrow Round Table where he was Chairman in 1976-77.  As might be expected with his classification, he had been club Treasurer and was still the club’s Trust Fund Treasurer until recently when his health declined.

He was club President in the Rotary year 83/84 and went on to hold various other offices at club, District and National level.  He was a strong advocate for our Rotary Foundation and was the first of the club’s continuing line of Foundation scholar host counsellors.

Sydney could always be relied upon to take part wholeheartedly in whatever activity the club was involved in and for input no matter what was up for discussion. He always had strong views and put them forward with vigorous enthusiasm.

Sydney served the District as Events Committee Chair in 1991-1992 and again in 2002-2003.  He was elected District Assistant Treasurer 1993-1996 and District Treasurer 1996-99, 2010-11 and 2019-22. He was a member of the Youth Makes Music Committee 1996-1997, 1998-1999, and 2008-2017. He was elected as our District Governor in 2000-2001.
Sydney then served as RGB&I Honorary Treasurer 2004-2007. He spent 16 years as a member of the District Conference Committee between 1992 and 2022, serving as the Conference Chair 9 times.  Sydney also served on several Rotary International Committees dealing with the worldwide administration of the organisation.

In the past he was more than happy to open up his home for any club fundraising or social event, eager to regale us with his cooking skills.  A wizard on the BBQ.  Rotary has lost a fine supporter and we in the Rotary Club of Northwick Park will all miss greatly.
