Success and Sadness combined

Our meeting on Wednesday 07 December 2022 was the occasion for our Special General Meeting combined with recognition of several items of good news, including the return to face to face meetings for Eric.  It was also tinged with sadness at the passing to “Higher Service” of a former Club President and Founder Member of the Club at the age of 99.

Warrant Officer Harold V A Kirby, flight engineer with 467 and 97 squadrons was conscripted in to the RAF in 1942 and trained as an engineer.  He then worked as an airframe fitter with 460 squadron. Harold volunteered for aircrew in 1943 and was accepted as a Flight Engineer. He went on to fly 44 missions on Lancaster bombers with 467 and 97 squadrons, the last one being on 25 April 1945. Following this he became a radar mechanic until demobbed in November 1945.  His time in Rotary was remembered by many in the Club for  the year 1988-89 when he served as Club President, and for his talent with words – he was a published poet! (“From Bard to Verse” – Austin Macauley (2018) ISBN 978-178710-245-3).  Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Meanwhile, at our Special General Meeting, the key officers for the next Rotary Year were elected, as were the Club’s delegates for the next national business meeting:

Club President 2023-24             Mike
Club Secretary 2023-24             Nigel
Club Treasurer 2023-24            June
Business Meeting Reps              Helen, Ros
Substitute Reps (if required)    Andrew, Mike
Accounts for 2021-2022            Adopted

The Club has also agreed a programme of donations for the Christmas season, and has finalised arrangements for the Club’s own Christmas Meal next Wednesday.  After that occasion, our next meeting will be in January 2023.
