Education is the Route out of Poverty

 

 

 

 

Our speaker on 18th May 2011 was Rajni Sriram from Wings of Hope, a charity operating from North West London. Wings of Hope (WOH) was set up 7 years ago and has a clever means of tackling poverty in India (near Chennai) and Malawi. WOH identifies that lack of literacy and education locks people into poverty and aims to overcome this by running a school in India and a college in Malawi. The third corner of the triangle is in the UK, and students here participate in an annual fundraising competition. The competition final has been held in the House of Lords, with each finalist team making a report to the judges. The winning team gets a free trip to the school in Chennai, and all the funds raised support the students in Chennai and Malawi – approximately 600 each year.
