What goes on in the City of London.

Our speaker on the 12th November, club member Rachelle  Goldberg, gave an insight on What goes on in the City of London and its unique civic structure:

The Mayor of London leads the Greater London Authority (GLA) and is responsible for the strategic governance of Greater London. Along with the London Assembly of 25 members.

In November 2024, Dame Susan Langley became the 697th Lord Mayor of the City of London, the third woman to hold the office, and the first to be styled “Lady Mayor.”

Role and Responsibilities.

Elected annually, the Lord/ Lady Mayor serves as:

  • International ambassador for the UK’s financial and professional services sector.
  • Head of the City of London Corporation, the world’s oldest democratic local government, governing the Square Mile
  • Presiding officer of the Court of Aldermen and the Court of Common Council
  • Civic leader with historic ties to the Monarchy and the Court of St James, including a role at the Accession Council.
  • Election and Tradition Candidates are chosen four years in advance by the Aldermen of the City
  • Eligibility requires prior service as a Sheriff of the City of London
  • A committee of Aldermen elects the candidate, continuing traditions dating back to 1189

Ward Clubs

The City is divided into wards, each with its own http://ward club   These clubs foster community spirit, civic pride, and engagement with the Corporation’s work. They ensure that the City’s ancient governance remains connected to its people today.
