WaterAid is a UK
based charity that has been singularly successful in bringing
clean water to millions of people in the world. Their programme
has always been based on getting local people to take
responsibility for the project, and then supply the missing
technical expertise.
Although much of WaterAid's funds have been raised through
the voluntary work undertaken by members of the UK's Water
Industry, there has also been a significant contribution from
Rotary Clubs.
The Rotary Club of Northwick Park paid for a bore hole to be
sunk in a village in Tanzania and has contributed funds through a number of fund raising ventures.
The need continues. A recent WaterAid publication estimated
that some 25,000 children die every day from diseases that
access to clean safe water could eradicate. WaterAid's
programmes go beyond the provision of the clean water, ensuring
that education and public health services are available for the
new survivors.
