The Shelterbox is a
heavy duty plastic crate that has been specially adapted to take the following items:
- 10-person tent
- 10 sleeping bags
- a torch
- a portable cooking stove
- a set of cooking utensils
- water purification tablets (reusing the container)
- some simple tools
- a shovel for digging a latrine trench
The concept of the ShelterBox was developed by Rotarian Tom Henderson from the Helston-Lizard Rotary Club in South West England.
The ShelterBox leapt to public awareness following the Tsunami in December 2004, and has been at the top of Rotarian's lists of projects for providing an immediate response to deal with the problems following large natural disasters. It also featured during the Kashmiri Earthquake disaster as shown in the photos on the right.
