Routemaster Buses Revisited

 

 

 

 

Our speaker on 19th January 2011 was Andrew Morgan, currently the Chairman of the Routemaster Owners and Operators Association (www.routemaster.org.uk). Andrew took us through the history of the popular double-decker bus from its introduction in 1958. Over the years some 2,876 were built including one rear-engined model. The design of the vehicle was based on sub-frames rather than traditional chassis designs, and the bodywork was all in aluminium in place of steel and timber construction. The Routemaster has probably been declared obsolete more times than any other model, and despite being completely withdrawn in 2005, there are still two routes in London that have Routemasters providing daily service (routes 9
